To many, all you see are a couple portables, some chairs, maybe a game of basketball happening and a beautiful night sky. But to me, I see so much more. I see the end of a beautiful drop-in night. A group of teenagers hanging out, sharing stories over on the blanket, a one-on-one basketball game where a teen is sharing some of the hardships at home, tears being shed on the curb side, vulnerability happening in the office, a teen opening up for the first time, laughter and pancakes being made in the kitchen, card games happening around the table, and to end off the night, all the teens naturally hanging out on the couches laughing, treating each other like family.
Youth work is such an adventure. Each time a teen walks through the door you have no idea what their day was like. And just like a picture you never really know what’s happening behind the scenes … until they begin to share. And these are some of the most beautiful moments.
We have the unique opportunity of providing community, security and consistency to a generation that is constantly faced with change, instability and a lot of unknowns. As one teen shared with me recently, they described RE:SOUL as their “happy place” – a place where they can forget all the bad stuff for a few hours of their day.
Each day is different but the people and the space stay the same. Life is filled with both joy and pain but when we do life together it can be a beautiful journey. There is much that most people will never see but there is always a story behind every youth. This is why life – like a picture – is worth a thousand words … and many, many more.
Gratefully yours,
