As a community based youth centre, one of the questions we are often asked is, “What does it mean that you’re faith based?” This is a great question, and quite honestly, it can be answered in many ways. While most of us immediately think of the spiritual, which is both logical and true, I want to share with you what it means to us in the context of community with one another.
Faith is a relational word and it speaks of belief, trust, confidence, and loyalty. While we most often use the term faith when talking about God, it is also the very thing we look for in our relationship with others. Faith in the context of relationship is a truly beautiful thing. The loss of faith in a relationship can be a truly devastating thing and something we’ve all experienced.
It has been said that it takes two years for a teenager to develop trust in an adult. While I question the full accuracy of such a statement, I fully agree with the sentiment. It does take a long time for a young person to develop trust. Sharing their life with someone – their joy, their pain, their loves, their losses, all the things that make them who they are – is risky business. And yet regularly they are doing this very thing at RE:SOUL.
The value of a youth centre like RE:SOUL is not just so that teens have a safe place to hang out. It is that, for sure … but it is so much more. By being a consistent presence in their lives we have the unique privilege and opportunity to “do life” with them. To enter into relationships of trust, confidence, and loyalty with them so that they might move forward in life, holistically cared for and healthy.
As we kick-off our 2018 Spring Fundraiser, we are inviting you to make a huge difference by making a small donation! We desire to be an ongoing, consistent, and ever increasing presence in our community and in the lives of youth. By participating, you are enabling us to be that community of faith for so many young people! The need for such a community is great! You can make a great difference!
